DAVIS ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER
JANUARY 2012

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY
There will be no school for students on Friday,
February 3rd due to a professional development day for
teachers.

EASTER BREAK
The last day of classes for students before the Easter
Break is Thursday, April 5th. School will reopen on
Monday, April 16th.

RECYCLING BLITZ
Thank you to the Grade 5 students, our Green Team,
who volunteered to run our Recycling Program this
year. In October we held a huge classroom
competition Recycling Blitz ... it was very successful!
Our next big Recycling Blitz will take place on
Friday, January 27. Bring all of your recyclables to
the school gym on Friday, January 27 and it will be
added to your child’s classroom total.

We have been asked by the recycling depot to pass
along the following reminders:
• please remove all bottle caps; they are no
longer accepting containers with caps
• please rinse all containers
• milk containers are not recyclable

PARKING LOT SAFETY
A big reminder to ALL to use the sidewalks, paved
walkway and crosswalks when coming into the school.
It is not safe to walk through the staff parking lot. As
winter weather is now upon us, the entrance through
Bethany United parking lot will be closed. This
entrance exits onto property that does not belong to
Eastern School District; therefore it cannot be cleared
as part of Davis Elementary’s snowclearing contract.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE
Congratulations to Kimberly Rose (first prize) and
Lisa Curran (second prize) who were the lucky
winners of our Christmas Raffle. Thank you to Ms.
Maria Murphy and her mother Mrs. Betty Murphy for
making and donating the beautiful handmade skirts;
thank you to everyone who bought tickets and
supported the cause.

CHRISTMAS DINNER
A free Christmas dinner was provided to all students
in grades K - 5 again this year. A BIG THANK YOU
to the Carbonear Lions Club who is a major sponsor
for the dinner this year along with Sunburst Farms,
Harbour Breeze Catering, and the School Milk
Foundation. Thanks also to the Bethany United
Church Mens Fellowship Club who cooked and
helped to serve our dinner this year. We would like to
thank them all for their very generous donations and
assistance with our dinner.

FRUITY FRIDAY/LIVING HEALTHY NEWS
A reminder, as always, for students to bring
along fruit on Fridays.
A new electronic resource, Living Healthy
News, is now available online through the Eastern
School District Website in the Parent Section. This is
the first parent/guardian edition and will be available
two times per school year. The website address is:
www.esdnl.ca Check it out for some new and creative
ideas.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

INTENSIVE CORE FRENCH (ICF) PROGRAM
There will be a meeting on Wednesday, January 11 at
7:00 p.m. at St. Francis School for parents of Grade 5
students interested in the Grade 6 ICF Program. If your
child wishes to do the ICF Program in Grade 6, please
complete the registration form sent home already and
return to your child’s homeroom teacher by Friday,
January 20th .

KINDERGARTEN &
GRADE 1 SKATING
PROGRAM
As a part of the Physical
Education program in
Kindergarten and Grade
One we continue to offer a
skating module. Students
will attend a skating
session once a month
during which students are
placed into groups based
on ability and comfort
level. The aim of this program is to improve skating
skills, self-confidence and promote an active life style.
The program will take place from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. on
the following (tentative) dates:
January 19
February 23
March 22

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations to Alaina King, 3M who passed
Level 7 swimming and has moved on to Level 8.

Congratulations to Adrian Pye, 2F on his first year of
presenting the Gerald Pye Memorial Scholarship at the
Marine Institute of Memorial University.

Congratulations to Lauren Shepherd, 5C who
completed Level 5 of the Red Cross swim program on
October 27th. Lauren also received her red belt in
Kenpo Karate on April 16th.

Congratulations to Rebecca Sellars, 2T who placed
first in solo 10 and under and first in solo 6 and under
at the Kiwanis Music Festival in April. Rebecca
actively participates and sings solo and with her dad in
the Bethany United Church Gospel Concerts.

Congratulations to Emily Pollastrone, KB who
passed Salamander in swimming and has moved on to
Sunfish level.

Congratulations to Cameron Lilly-Peach, KB who
finished Level 2 swimming lessons in October and is
now doing Level 3. Cameron also participated in
CBN minor soccer during the summer.

Congratulations to Hayden Wareham, KB.
Hayden’s health has improved greatly since beginning
Kindergarten. During his semi-annual visit to the Sick
Kids Hospital in Toronto in the fall, Hayden had an
excellent report and is now allowed to stay off oxygen
during the school day.

Congratulations to Susie Butt, 1K who completed
Whale level in swimming and has moved on to Level
1.

NOR CARD

Nor Card has advised that the Towel
Holders and Purse Partners which were on
back-order are no longer available. Please
send your backorder notice along to Ms.
Broomfield and she will issue a refund. In
order to process the refund cheque we need
the name of the person who ordered the
item and the person’s mailing address
(along with the postal code).

For those people who had re-orders, the
shipment is scheduled to arrive here on
January 17th.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
The last day of school before Christmas Holidays is
Wednesday, Dec. 21st . School reopens on Tuesday,
January 3rd, 2012.

REMINDER
Weather permitting, students will be going outside at
lunch time. Please ensure your children are dressed
appropriately.

CHRISTMAS DINNER, SING-A-LONG &
SCHOOL CLOSING ON DECEMBER 21st.

A Christmas Sing-a-long will take
place on Wednesday, December 21st .
This sing-a-long will be for students
only.

We will be providing a free Christmas
dinner to all students in grades K - 5
again this year. A BIG THANK
YOU to the Carbonear Lions Club who is a major
sponsor for the dinner this year along with Sunburst
Farms, Harbour Breeze Catering, and the School Milk
Foundation. The Bethany United Church Mens
Fellowship Club will be cooking and helping to serve
our dinner this year. We would like to thank them all
for their very generous donations and assistance with
our dinner. If you are able to help peel vegetables on
the evening of Tuesday, December 20, please call the
school at 596-5012; peelers would need to be at the
Bethany Church basement for approximately 6:30
p.m.

We will walk Kindergarten students to Bethany
United Church to eat at 11:00 and they will be bussed
home at the usual time. All Kindergartens will
attend school in the morning. Students in Grades 1 - 5
will walk to Bethany United to eat at 12:00.

Grade 1 - 5 students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m.
Parent who are picking up their children can do so at
1:30 p.m. Students who normally walk will also be
dismissed at 1:30 p.m.

SPREAD THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Once again this year we encourage anyone who
wishes to spread the Christmas spirit to make a
donation of a food bank item. We will be collecting
non-perishable food items at the school until Friday,
December 16, 2011.

PARENT VISITATION
Parent visitation was a great success again this year.
Thank you to all who were able to come along. We
encourage everyone to keep in touch at any time
regarding your child’s progress.

CHRISTMAS TREE SKIRT & DISHES TICKETS
We will draw for our Tree Skirts and Dishes on
December 19th. Be sure to have all stubs, money and
unsold tickets back to the school by Thursday,
December 15.

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS
Preparation and practice is well underway for our
concerts. K - 2 will perform on Tuesday, December 13th;
Grades 3 - 5 on December 15th . Doors open at 6:30;
performances begin at 7:00 p.m. We look forward to
seeing you there. A detailed memo has been sent home
re purchasing tickets.

CHRISTMAS VISIT
Our Grade 3 students will spread some Christmas cheer
as they make a visit to the Harbour Lodge on December
19th.

SKATING PARTY & KINDERSTART
Our first Skating Party will be held on Tuesday,
December 20th . The Grade 1, 2 & 3 students will skate
from 9:30 - 10:30; Grades 4 & 5 from 10:30 to 11:30.
The cost is $2.00. A separate memo and permission slip
will be sent home.

There will be no school for Kindergartens on
December 20 - this is a Kinder Start day. Please note
that this month’s Kinder Start session is on a
Tuesday, not a Friday.

CALL FOR SKATES/HELMETS

Davis Elementary is asking for donations of
skates/helmets to support its skating program this year.
Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will be skating
monthly and there will be two skating parties for all
students. To help keep costs down for parents of
quickly growing children, Davis is providing free
skates/helmets* to those in need. If you have any
skates/helmets to donate to this worthwhile program -
including adult sizes (which may be used by larger
children) - please drop them by the school any time
during the school day. If you have any questions,
please contact the school at 596-5012. THANK YOU
for helping our children learn to skate. (* Helmets
must be CSA approved hockey helmets.)

K - 1 SKATING
We are off to another slippery start! Kindergarten and
grade 1 students are all learning how to skate this year
in our second skating program. All students are
getting one skating session per month to improve their
skating skills and to be physically active. A number
of parents and caregivers are also enjoying this
opportunity to be active.

RECYCLING

Thank you to the Grade 5 students, our Green Team,

REMEMBRANCE DAY ASSEMBLIES
There will be two Remembrance Day assemblies on
Friday, November 4th. The K-2 assembly will be
hosted by the Grade 2 students at 9:30 and the Grade
3-5 assembly will begin at 11:10 and is being hosted
by the Grade 5 students. All parents/guardians are
welcome. Everyone is encouraged to wear uniforms
or red.

REPORTING
Reports for Term 1 will go home on
Tuesday, November 29th . Parent-
Teacher interviews will take place on
Wednesday, November 30th.

RECYCLING BLITZ A ‘HUGE SUCCESS’!!
Many thanks to students and parents for all
your support in our first ever Recycling Blitz
Classroom Competition which took place on Friday,
October 28th. We collected $419.00 in recyclables -
AMAZING! In addition MMSB (Multi-Materials
Stewardship Board) will match this amount again - our
grand total for the Blitz then becomes $838.00! This
is enough to buy a new soundboard for the gym to
replace the one which broke in the spring. Because
this was such a success we plan to do another one
after Christmas ... start collecting now! Anyone
wishing to make additional donations to Davis
Elementary recycling can do so by dropping off their
recycling at the Green Depot here in Carbonear and
ask to have it credited to Davis Elementary’s account.

We have been asked by the recycling depot to pass
along the following reminders:
• please remove all bottle caps; after Jan. 1st
they will no longer accept containers with
caps
• please rinse all containers
• milk containers are not recyclable

A BIG THANK YOU TO MRS. CHAFE
AND THE GREEN TEAM ... They have been
running our recycling program this year including our
Blitz!
The winner of last week’s blitz is Mrs.
Fillier’s class - 2F. They will enjoy a movie and
snacks on Friday afternoon.

DONATION!
Thank you to Concord Paving for their generous
donation of $500.00 to our school Breakfast Program.
Also, thank you to Mr. Daniel Dwyer, father of Jacob
Dwyer, 2F for his generous donation of $100.00 to our
Breakfast Program. Our Breakfast Program gives
many of our students a healthy start to the day.
Thanks to all the volunteers and organizations who
make this program possible.

OUTDOOR DAYS
Please be sure to dress your child for outdoor play. The
weather has turned colder, however we will continue to
take them outside for fresh air and exercise.

SCHOOL VISITOR POLICY
Parents/guardians are reminded to check in at the office
at all times when entering the building. This is very
important as we strive to maximize instructional time for
students and provide a safe and secure school
environment for all.

BOOK FAIR
We will be holding a Scholastic
Book Fair from November 25- 30.
More information will follow.

LOCKDOWN
In keeping with District policy, Davis Elementary had
its first Lockdown drill on Oct. 21st . Many emergency
situations can come up in a school day; it is important
that all staff and students know how to respond
appropriately. Practicing for fire drills has been
accepted as a routine way of preparing for an
emergency; a lockdown drill should not be seen any
differently.

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS
Our Christmas Concerts will be held on Tuesday,
December 13 (K - 2) and Thursday, December 15 (Gr. 3
- 5). More detailed information will be provided as these
dates draw near.

Students and staff wear red the first Friday of every
month to show our appreciation to all the brave men
and women in the Canadian Military.

CALL FOR SKATES/HELMETS
Davis Elementary is asking for donations of
skates/helmets to support its skating program this year.
Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will be skating
monthly, and to help keep costs down for parents of
quickly growing children, Davis is providing free
skates/helmets* to those in need. If you have any
skates/helmets to donate to this worthwhile program -
including adult sizes (which may be used by larger
children) - please drop them by the school any time
during the school day. If you have any questions,
please contact the school at 596-5012. THANK YOU
for helping our children learn to skate. (*Helmets
must be CSA approved hockey helmets.)

school. Please note: Foods that state ‘may contain

clearly communicated to all schools in Eastern District
policies.
Also, our school is now a SCENT FREE
building. We have students with SEVERE allergies
to scents.

HEALTHY LUNCHES ARE EASY TO PUT
TOGETHER

• A thermos of chili, whole wheat dinner roll,
slice of cheddar cheese, washed grapes and
water.
• Turkey on whole grain bread with lettuce and
tomato, yogurt, blueberries and water.
• Mini pizza (English muffin, sauce, vegetables,
meat or alternative), canned peaches and milk.
• Leftover meat and vegetables on a whole
wheat tortilla with cheddar cheese, fruit cup
and water.
• Chicken and vegetable soup, bread sticks,
vanilla pudding and 100% fruit juice.
Important Tip: Encourage children and teens to
satisfy thirst with plain water.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations to Adrian Pye, 2F for receiving his level
3 badge in swimming in October. Adrian will begin
level 4 lessons in November.

Swim Kids 5 on October 27, 2011.

Congratulations to Morgan Bishop, 2F who completed
second year of Sparks in May. Morgan also began
fourth year ballet in September.

Congratulations to Maggie Moriarty, 4J who completed
her first year in art lessons. Maggie is currently in Level
6 swimming lessons. Maggie completed her second year
as a Brownie and has now become a Girl Guide.

Congratulations to Marissa Moyse, 2T who completed a
second year of Sparks as well as third year of dance

This summer she participated in CBN Minor Soccer and

KINDERSTART
On Wednesday, Oct. 19 there will be a meeting for all

who volunteered to run our Recycling Program this
year. On Friday, October 28 we are having a

fundraiser was chosen at the request of many parents.

HEAD LICE
On occasion there have been cases of head lice within
our local area. Head lice are tiny insects that live in
human hair around the back of the neck and behind the
ears. They lay eggs which become nits. Head lice and
nits can be treated with shampoo which can be obtained
from the drugstore. Nits, unlike dandruff, stick to the
hair and must be removed manually even after using
the special shampoo. Head lice can be controlled by
examining your child’s head on a regular basis (at least
once a week) and especially following social events
such as sleep overs or camps. Head lice are spread by
head-to-head contact and possibly through sharing of
personal items such as combs, brushes, hats, hair bands,
headphones, and helmets. Children should be
encouraged not to share these items. If our child has
head lice, everyone in your household should be
checked and if necessary treated. It would be helpful
to contact the parents of your child’s close friends, so
that they can check their children. Also, please notify
the Community Health Nurse for the school/daycare
which your child attends. By following these measures,
the problem of head lice can be minimized and
controlled.

The first Friday of every month we wear something red
to honour the men and women of our armed forces.

KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS VISIT NOEL’S
TURKEY FARM
On Monday, September 19, the Kindergartens
went to Noel’s Turkey Farm. The children had a very
good time. They saw baby chicks and full grown
turkeys. We would like to thank Noel Motors for
providing the bus for the tour and Carol Ann Noel for
giving us the tour of the turkey farm.

TCP HEALTH FOUNDATION TELETHON
We continue to collect pennies for the TCP
Telethon. We hope to be a ‘grand giver’ ($500 donation
or more); the telethon is Sunday, October 16th.

FARM DAYS
On Thursday, September 29 all students from
Grades 1 - 5 travelled to the S. W. Moors Memorial
Stadium to take part in Farm Days. Students enjoyed
the many new attractions including getting on the
‘Veggie Bus’ and petting farm animals. A great time
was had by all. Thank you to all the parents and
caregivers who were able to join us.

FALL FAIR SPELLING BEE
Congratulations to the following grade 5 participants
who took part in the Grade Five Spelling Bee held at the
Trinity Conception Fair: Lauren Shepherd, Jack Green,
Coady Butt, Rileigh Lewis, Cameron King, Mackenzie
Green, Patrick Donnelly.

It was great to see so many parents on
September 21st for Curriculum Night. For any

CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
This year Davis has 70 runners participating in grades 3
- 5. So far some went to Pippy Park in St. John’s for a
meet and some tried the Blueberry Run in Harbour
Grace. We had a number of parents and teachers
run/walk in that as well. Special congratulations to Erin
Baker in Grade 3 who won a bronze medal in that race.
The Annual Harvest Run for schools was held
on October 12. Davis entered 63 runners from grades 3
- 5 and there were a total of 1100 participants from
grades 3 - 12. We had a fantastic time with Hailee
Hoyles finishing in third place for grade 3 girls. The
official results will be posted and reported as soon as
they become available. Stay tuned!

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations to Brooke Higdon, 4J who completed
Level 1 Swimming in August; completed 2nd year guitar in
June; placed 2nd in Kiwanis festival in April; completed 1st
year dance in May; and, was awarded the CLB Colonel’s
Award for good conduct and sportsmanship in June.

Congratulations to Jacob Griffin, 4J who had a successful
summer playing softball and taking swimming lessons.
Jacob also participated in the Danny Cleary hockey school
in August.

Congratulations to Alaina King, 3M who passed Level 6

WELCOME BACK!
September arrived very quickly - we hope you all
enjoyed your summer holiday. Throughout the year
you will receive a school newsletter - usually once per
month. Be sure to read the newsletter carefully as it is
our way of passing on important information to
parents.

ALLERGIES
We have students in our school who have SEVERE
allergies to PEANUTS & KIWI. Please do not give
your child/ren any peanut products or kiwi to bring to
school.

their lunch and from 1:15 - 1:35 they will have their

MEET THE TEACHER / CURRICULUM NIGHT
We would like to invite all parents/guardians to attend
our Curriculum Night scheduled for Wednesday,
September 21 at 7:00 p.m. It is important that all
parents attend if at all possible.

TRINITY-CONCEPTION-PLACENTIA HEALTH
FOUNDATION PENNY DRIVE
Yes, we will be collecting pennies for the annual Health
Foundation Drive again this year which will be held on
Sunday, October 16th . Please notify Mrs. Hamilton if
you are able to help roll pennies.

WE SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!
Students and staff wear red on the first Friday of each
month to show our appreciation to all the brave men and
women in the Canadian Military.

HEALTHY EATING/FRUITY FRIDAY
We are encouraging healthy eating and
healthy lifestyles. Please ensure your child
brings nutritious snacks and lunches to school. Soft
drinks are not permitted.
REMINDERS!

The following forms have been sent home. Please
keep an eye out for them and return them as soon as
possible. Admission Form; Parent Volunteer Form;
Allergy Form.

SCHOOL PICTURES
Individual school pictures will be taken on Monday,
October 17; class pictures will be done on Tuesday,
October 18.

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
All visitors to the school must check in at the office
before proceeding to a classroom. If you are picking
your child up for lunch or after school please check in
at the office first; it is not necessary to arrive at the
school until just before dismissal times. It can be very
distracting for students when parents wait outside their
classroom for long periods of time.

RECYCLING - containers will once again be placed
in the hallways. We recycle juice packs (and pop cans
on special occasions).

PHYS. ED. REMINDER
Parents are asked to ensure that students remember to
wear or bring proper exercise clothing for gym
classes. Shorts, track pants, windpants, and sneakers
are appropriate and necessary for good hygiene and
safety. Please be advised that zipper and slip-on
sneakers are potentially hazardous for most Physical
Education activities.

NEWSLETTER ITEMS
Every month we celebrate student birthdays through
the school PA system and in the monthly newsletter.
We also celebrate student achievements in our
newsletter - please use the achievement form sent
home to notify us of your child’s accomplishments.
These are to be returned to your child’s homeroom
teacher. Note: Please keep accomplishments short and
to the point - we reserve the right to delete
unnecessary information.

INDOOR / OUTDOOR FOOTWEAR
To help keep our floors clean, if possible, we
recommend that all students have two pairs of
footwear - one for inside and one to wear outside.

MEDICATION
A reminder that staff members are not permitted to
administer medication of any sort to students. Please
do not send Tylenol or other medications to school
with your child.

STUDENT DROP OFF
Parents/caregivers who drop off and pick up their
children are asked to do so at the DESIGNATED
STUDENT WALKWAY. This is the safest route for
students to enter and exit school grounds. The staff
parking lot is not a safe route for students; only staff
vehicles are permitted on the parking lot.

the appropriate entrances to avoid congestion.

HARBOUR BREEZE DRAWS

Students who purchase the daily special lunch from
Harbour Breeze will have their names entered into a
draw. The prize will be free lunch for a week. The
draws will take place every second week.

YEAR-END SCHEDULE
The end of another school year is fast
approaching. We are now finalizing dates and
schedules. The last week of school will go as follows:

Monday
June 20 Regular School Day for Grades K-5

Tuesday
June 21 Regular School Day for Grades K- 5

Wednesday
June 22 K - 5 YEAR-END ASSEMBLY
For students only!

Wednesday is a full day of school
for Grade 1 - 5 students.

All Kindergarten students attend
school in the afternoon.

Thursday
June 23 THIS IS THE LAST DAY
STUDENTS ATTEND SCHOOL.

➠ Grade 1 - 5 students attend school
from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

➠ All Kindergarten students will
attend school from 9:00 a.m. -
11:40 a.m.

Students will be eating lunch at
school from 12:00 to 12:40 p.m.

MICROWAVE SERVICE AND BREAKFAST
PROGRAM
The Breakfast Program will conclude on
Friday, June 17th . The Microwave Program has
already concluded for the year.

At this time we would like to sincerely thank
all parents, grandparents, community groups,
businesses and friends who have volunteered for these
programs this year. Special thanks to Mrs.
Christine Gillespie for coordinating the Breakfast
Program and to Mrs. Tina Emberley for coordinating
the Microwave Program. This year we experienced a
great deal of difficulty getting enough volunteers for the
Microwave and Breakfast Programs. At this point in
time we have decided to cancel the Microwave Program
next year. By folding one program we hope to get
enough volunteers to more effectively run the other.

THANKS ALSO TO: Mr. Phil Hurley for his work
with the Recycling Program.

HARBOUR BREEZE CATERING
CAFETERIA AND CANTEEN SERVICES
Harbour Breeze Catering will conclude their
service at our school on Friday, June 17th .

LIBRARY BOOKS
Any students with library books belonging to
the school are reminded to return them as soon as
possible so that all bookkeeping may be clued up.

GRADE 5 YEAR-END SOCIAL
This year’s Grade 5 farewell will take place on
Wednesday, June 15th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

STUDENT PLACEMENT FOR 2011 - 2012
SCHOOL YEAR
Placement for next year will be done on the
basis of student needs, academic and social factors, as
well as class numbers. Please do not make special
requests for class placement for your child. It is not
fair to show preferential treatment for some students
over others. Every consideration will be taken when
placing your child to best serve their needs.

SPORTS DAY

Our annual Sports Day will be held this year on
Thursday, June 16th (if weather is bad on Thursday, it
will go ahead on Friday, June 17th ) for all students
(Kindergarten to Grade 5). Listen to KIXX school
announcements on the morning of June 16th to see if
Sports Day will go ahead.
We will bus students to the field
by the Carbonear swimming pool at 9:00
a.m. Students will be bussed home
directly from the field. A bus will
bring walkers and other students who
are normally picked up back to the
school. Walkers can then leave to walk
home from the school.
Parents/guardians may pick up students as usual at the
school.
ALL KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS
WILL ATTEND THE MORNING SESSION
AND WILL RETURN HOME AT 11:40 A.M.
(Departure from the Recreation Complex)

SPORTS DAY SCHEDULE

9:30 a.m. - Events Begin
11:00 a.m. - Recess Break
12:30 p.m. - Lunch

Students are to be dressed appropriately for outdoor
physical activities. (Wear a hat and be sure to have
sunblock on.) Students are required to bring a recess
snack and their own drinks for the entire day (no
cans of pop). Juice and water are recommended for
best hydration during physical activity. Hot dogs
(provided by the school) will be barbequed on site for
lunch. If your child will not eat hot dogs please
ensure he/she brings their own picnic lunch.

BACKPACKS AND WATER BOTTLES
SHOULD BE CLEARLY LABELLED
WITH THE STUDENT’S NAME

To make this event possible and run smoothly,
we need at least 30 volunteers! If you can volunteer
please complete and return the slip your child brings
home and return it to your child’s teacher as soon as
possible.

RECYCLING DRIVE
We will be having a Recycling
Drive on Saturday, June 11th from
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Mr. Phil
Hurley will be at the school parking
lot to accept your donations. If you
have recycling to donate but no way
to get it here please call Mr. Phil Hurley at 596-0345
and he will arrange a time to have it picked up. Every
student who brings in some recycling from home will
have his/her name put in a draw for some prizes.

FAMILY FUN DAY
Our final Family Fun event of the year, ‘Family Fun
Day’, is on Saturday, June 18th from 2:00 to 4:00.
Students and their families are invited to come along
for an afternoon of fun! The cost is $5.00 per family.
There will be a Jumping Castle, Dunk Tank, and many
more fun activities! All children must be
accompanied by an adult.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations to Kaitlin Butt, 4J and the Cee Bees
girls under 12 for winning the Bronze medal in
Marystown in March. Kaitlin also completed her first
year Atom Cee Bees hockey.

Congratulations to Cody Green, 4M who received a
fifth place trophy at the annual Kempo tournament in
St. John’s on May 14th.

Congratulations to Preston Griffin, 4M who won
silver for sparring at the Kempo tournament in St.
John’s on May 14th.

Congratulations to Rachel Snow, 3N who placed third
in her first Harvest Run. She also scored her first goal
at the Twin Rinks stadium, with the Gould’s Hockey
U9 Jamboree. Rachel also participated in the
Jumpstart Soccer Academy along with playing in the
Tim Horton’s winter soccer program. She performed
three piano pieces at the Kiwanis Music Festival and
she thoroughly enjoyed singing Ordinary Miracles
solo with her classmates. Rachel has completed the
Brownie program and will advance to Girl Guides in
the fall. Rachel is really looking forward to attending
Burry Heights Camp for the first time.

Congratulations to Julia Short, KC who completed
the first year of Sparks and Ballet.

Congratulations to Hailee Hoyles, 2B who completed
first year Brownies, first year Jazz with Dance Worx
Studio and first year CBN novice hockey.

Congratulations to Kyle Short, 2B who scored his first
goal during a hockey tournament in Whitbourne on
April 16th. Kyle also completed first year guitar.

Congratulations to Hayley Power, 2B who has been in
dance lessons at Dance Worx Studio for 3 years. This
year she performed in both the Jazz and Ballet dance
recitals in May.

Congratulations to Reanna Carpenter, 2B who
completed the soccer program in April and received
badges for attending Brownie Camp in May.

Congratulations to Alaina King, 2B who enrolled in
Grade 3 - 4 Art class at Michelle’s Fine Art Studio and
will continue with the next class. Alaina also completed
first year Brownies, earned several badges, and took part
in Brownie Camp in May.

Congratulations to Cahley Ann Warren, 3N who
received her yellow belt in Kempo. Cahley performed
three piano pieces and sang two solos at the Kiwanis
Music Festival. Cahley placed third in one of her voice
competitions. Cahley has also finished the Brownie
program and will advance to Girl Guides in the fall.

Congratulations to Curtis Warren, KC who completed
his first year of hockey. Curtis will advance to Squirts
in the fall. Curtis also recently received his orange belt
in Kempo.

Way to go, students!

GOLF ANYONE?
The Grade 5 students took part in a
‘Golf in Schools’ program at the end
of May. The program is offered by
the NL Golf Association and Mr.
Jim Stick was the instructor.
Students and teachers learned and
practiced the chip shot and drive.
Using special golf balls and grass for
inside the grade 5s had a real taste of
the great sport of golf.

FLEA MARKET
Thank you to everyone who supported our Flea
Market on Saturday, May 7th. It was a huge success
once again this year!

KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION PICTURE
RE-TAKES - will be done on Monday, May 16th.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY
There will be no school for students on Thursday,
May 19th due to a teacher professional development
day.

CAMPING DAY
In honour of the May long weekend we are asking
everyone to wear their ‘camping clothes’ on Friday,
May 20! Show your Davis Elementary school spirit.

HOLIDAY
There will be no classes for students on Monday,
May 23rd due to the Victoria Day Holiday.

Newfoundland author/artist Ed Kavanagh.

KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION
Our Kindergarten
Graduation will take place
on Thursday, June 9th.

GRADE 5 YEAR-END SOCIAL
This year’s Grade 5 farewell event will take place on

FRUITY FRIDAY
Reminder to bring along your fruit on
Fridays!

DONATION
A big thank you to Noel Motors who provided ‘free
bussing’ to all the choirs who performed in this year’s
Kiwanis Music Festival!

FITNESS FUN
Spring is in the air! We at Davis are encouraging
families to get out and get active together. Start with 15
minutes a day - go for a walk, rake your leaves, ride a
bike, play tag in your yard. A family that plays together
will be healthy together.

BRACELET DAY
How many bracelets do you have? Wear all your
bracelets to school on Wednesday, May 18 to show your
school spirit! Davis Elementary bracelets can be
purchased for $2.00 at any time.

MILKY MONDAY
May 30th is Milky Monday. Dress in black and white
like a dairy cow and bring something from the dairy
group for recess or lunch. Milk prizes will be awarded.
Thanks to the School Milk Foundation for providing
free milk and prizes all year!

BE PREPARED’
We have been actively encouraging all Davis
Elementary students to ‘Be Prepared’ at all times.
Students receive a ballot at the end of every day if they
can answer ‘yes’ to the following questions:
✔ Was I prepared for morning announcements (sitting
and listening)?
✔ Did I have my books out and a pencil sharpened for
the beginning of each class?
✔ Was I sitting in my seat after the bell?
✔ Did I complete all assigned homework?

All ballots are entered for Friday draws. Last week’s

Bees team mates on winning Bronze in Marystown in
March.

Congratulations to Susie Butt, KC for winning the
colouring contest at Shopper’s Drug Mart.

Congratulations to Colby Sharpe, 2B for earning the
following badges in CLB: 1st year achievement J.T.C.
badge, Attendance badge, Recruits badge, Christian
knowledge, Agility and Service. Colby is also
working on Level 5 in swimming.

Congratulations to Sebastian LeShane, 4J. Sebastian
placed first at Kiwanis for his piano solo in the 11
years and under class 59; he placed second for his
piano solo in the 12 years and under class 75B.
Sebastian also attained the rank of “orange belt” in
Kenpo at Foley’s Martial Arts.

Congratulations to Alaina King, 2B who finished the
first set of classes K-2 and was promoted to the next
group 3-4 at Michelle’s Art Studio in March.

donated their hair on April 23 to an organization called
“Angel Hair for Kids”. This organization helps kids
living with cancer to have wigs. The hair must be 10
inches in length. This is the second donation for Julia
and Sara and the first for Jessica. Well done!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS

1. There will be an early closure for students on
Tuesday, March 22 as part of the Eastern School
District’s Strategic Plan. Eastern District is seeking
input from all stakeholders, including school staffs, as
they develop their strategic plan for the next three
years. Parents who wish to have input can do so by
completing the survey on the Eastern School District
website (www.esdnl.ca). Click on the link called
“Strategic Plan Survey”. Students will be bussed home
at 1:50 pm; recess and lunch will be at the usual time.
Kindergarten students will attend in the morning and
afternoon although the afternoon session will end at
1:50.

2. There will be no school for students on
Friday, March 18 as teachers will be taking part in a
Professional Development Day on Assistive
Technology and Assessment in Mathematics.

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Second term reports will be distributed on Tuesday,
March 15, 2011. Parent-teacher interviews will take
place on Thursday, March 17. All students will be
dismissed at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 17 for
this reason. Students will not be eating lunch at the
school on Thursday, March 17 so remember not to
order from Harbour Breeze Catering for that day.
*Please note that there will not be any school for the
afternoon Kindergarten class on Thursday, March 17.

STUDENT PHONE NUMBERS
Parents and guardians are reminded to notify the
school when phone numbers change so that we are
able to make contact with parents when necessary.
This includes home, work and cell phone numbers.

PARKING LOT SAFETY
A memo was sent home recently regarding safety
concerns when dropping off students at the school.
We are still looking for volunteers to assist with
Student Walkway and Staff Parking Lot patrols. We
need volunteers from approximately 8:30 - 8:55 a.m.
Your assistance in assuring student safety would be
greatly appreciated. Please call the school at 596-
5012 or return the slip if you can help in any way.

NOTE: Many students are being dropped off late at
8:55 a.m.; however, the first bell goes at 8:50.
Please make every effort to have your child at school
on time.

OUTDOOR DAYS
Students have been going outside regularly to play
during lunch to enjoy the fresh air and get some
exercise. Remember to dress your child for outdoor
play.

TEACHER/STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK
The staff of Davis Elementary would like to extend a
heartfelt thank you to the members of School Council
and other parents for the numerous thoughtful deeds and
snacks during Teacher Appreciation Week this year.
We certainly enjoyed the home-cooked potluck dinner,
desserts, finger foods, gifts and most especially the ‘duty
coverage’!

KINDERSTART
The next KinderStart session will take place on Friday,
March 25, 2011.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
Our second Scholastic Book Fair will take place from
March 14 - 17. Please look for a letter and schedule in
your child’s bookbag in the coming days. There will be
a Family Event during Parent Visitation on Thursday,
March 17 from 1:30 - 3:30 and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m

PANCAKE DAY
Tuesday, March 8 is Pancake Day and we will be
celebrating with freshly made pancakes prepared by
parent volunteers. Christine Gillespie is organizing this
year’s event. Please notify her if you are able to help
out.

JANEWAY DAY
Thank you for all donations to the Janeway; this year
our students raised $303.90. Mrs. Fillier’s class raised
$53.00 and won the Earth Friendly Teddy Bear for
collecting the most money. Provincially, teachers and
students have supported Janeway Day in the schools
since 1986. Over $900,000.00 has been donated to the
Janeway Child Health Center from children’s recess
money and other fund-raising efforts of our students and
teachers. This is a great achievement for our students
who have always taken part. Thank you to all who
participated!

REMINDER RE STUDENT DROP OFF
Parents/caregivers who drop off and pick up their
children are asked to do so at the DESIGNATED
STUDENT WALKWAY. This is the safest route for
students to enter and exit school grounds. The staff
parking lot is not a safe route for students; only staff
vehicles are permitted on the parking lot.

LITERACY DAY
Davis Elementary celebrated Family Literacy Day on
Thursday and Friday, January 27 & 28. Students took
part in many fun activities around the theme, Dr.
Seuss.

100th DAY OF SCHOOL
As part of the Kindergarten Math Program, students
count the days of school and celebrate the 100th Day of
School (approximately February 21). Once again this
year the whole school will help them with their
celebration. More details will follow.

KINDERGARTEN & GRADE 1 SKATING
PROGRAM
Congratulations to all our Kindergarten and Grade 1
students who have shown lots of improvement in our
school skating program; “Way to go, guys!” Just a
reminder that bike helmets are NOT permitted for
skating. All children MUST wear a C.S.A. approved
skating helmet. Parents are encouraged to meet students
at the stadium. Help tying up laces is greatly
appreciated!!! The next K - 1 skating is scheduled for
February 24th.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT
Our first Family Fun Night was a huge success; we had
approximately 200 parents and children attend on
Friday, Jan. 28 for our Meet & Greet. Our next Family
Fun Night is scheduled for Friday, February 25; the
theme is Bullying. A reminder to all children and
parents to bring a change of footwear. In order to avoid
a slip and fall it is important to have a pair of dry
sneakers for active events.

“STAND UP DAY”
On Wednesday, February 23rd the students will take part
in “Stand Up Day”, an anti-bullying awareness day.
Students from K - 5 will take part in various anti-
bullying activities that include presentations from guest
speakers. The Grade five students will be taking a lead
role in planning this event, from making announcements
to organizing classroom activities. On this day all
students are encouraged to wear something pink.

ART SMART GRANT
The school has been
successful in securing a
grant that will enable us
to utilize the expertise of
a local artist and painter,
Mrs. Michelle (Penney)
Rowe. During the month
of March Mrs. Rowe will
be spending time in each
classroom facilitating
painting classes. We are very excited about this
program as students who benefitted from Mrs. Rowe’s
volunteer time last year produced some nicely painted
pictures.

HEALTHY EATING PROGRAM
The Grade 2 and 3 students are participating in a
‘Healthy Eating’ program offered by The Lower Trinity
South Rural Development Association, Eastern School
District, Provincial Wellness and the St. Francis
Greenhouse. The program gives the students an
opportunity to visit the greenhouse with their teachers
regularly to meet the greenhouse technician, plant a
variety of seeds, learn about plants, their nutritional
value, how to care for them, and harvest later.

REMINDER RE FROZEN DINNERS
We continue to have students bringing frozen dinners
(eg. Michelinas) to school for lunch. We are reminding
all parents to not send these dinners - they require too
long ( 4 - 5 minutes) to heat. Students do not have
enough time to eat when bringing these dinners. Also,
please do not send along such things as Kraft Dinner
cups, which require water to be boiled. This is a safety
hazard for young students.

EASTER BREAK
The last day of classes for students before the Easter Break is Thursday, April 21st. School will reopen on Monday, May 2nd.

PARKING LOT SAFETY
A big reminder to ALL to use the paved walkway when coming into the school. It is not safe to walk through the staff parking lot. Also many parents are stopping on the crosswalk to drop off their children. This is a safety concern for all and must stop immediately.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE
Congratulations to Mrs. Verna Griffin and Mrs. Joselyn Clarke who were the lucky winners of our Christmas Raffle. Both winners received a handmade Christmas Tree Skirt and wooden lighted snowflake. Thank you to Ms. Maria Murphy and her mother Mrs. Betty Murphy for making and donating the beautiful handmade skirts; thank you to everyone who bought tickets and supported the cause.

KINDERGARTEN & GRADE 1 SKATING PROGRAM
As a part of the Physical Education program in Kindergarten and Grade One we continue to offer a skating module. Students will attend a skating session once a month during which students are placed into groups based on ability and comfort level. The aim of this program is to improve skating skills, self-confidence and promote an active life style. This program is not affiliated with Can Skate. The program will take place from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. on the following (tentative) dates:

Davis Elementary is continuing to accept donations of skates/helmets to support its skating program this year. Davis is providing free skates/helmets to those in need. REMEMBRANCE DAY ASSEMBLIES
There will be two Remembrance Day assemblies on Tuesday, November 9th. The K-2 assembly will be hosted by the Grade 2 students at 9:15and the Grade 3-5 assembly will begin at 10:15 and is being hosted by the Grade 5 students. All parents/guardians are welcome. Everyone is encouraged to wear uniforms or red.

OUTDOOR DAYS
Please be sure to dress your child for outdoor play. The weather has turned colder, however we will continue to take them outside for fresh air and exercise.

SCHOOL VISITOR POLICY
Parents/guardians are reminded to check in at the office at all times when entering the building. This is very important as we strive to maximize instructional time for students and provide a safe and secure school environment for all.

BOOK FAIR
We will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair from November 29 - December 2. More information will follow.

LOCKDOWN
In keeping with District policy, Davis Elementary had its first Lockdown drill on Oct. 4. Many emergency situations can come up in a school day; it is important that all staff and students know how to respond appropriately. Practicing for fire drills has been accepted as a routine way of preparing for an emergency; a lockdown drill should not be seen any differently.

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS
Our Christmas Concerts will be held on Tuesday, December 7 (K - 2) and Wednesday, December 8 (Gr. 3 - 5). More detailed information will be provided as these dates draw near.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

HALLOWEEN SAFETY
This year students in Grades K - 5 enjoyed a Halloween Safety Presentation by Constable Vicki Chalker, our Community Policing Officer. Students are encouraged to remember and practice all of the safety tips on Halloween night this Sunday, October 31.

ALLERGIES
We have students in our school who have SEVERE allergies to NUTS, EGGS, and KIWI. Please do not give your child/ren any of these products to bring to school.

HURRICANE RELIEF
Thank you one and all for your Help for Home donations to help fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians affected by the devastation of Hurricane Igor. Our school raised $444.62 for this cause.

CROSS-COUNTRY
Another cross-country running season has come to an end. This year we had 60 students from grades 3, 4 and 5 participate in practices and competitions in Torbay and Carbonear. The Harvest Run was held on October 27th this year. The full results will be published in the Compass and posted in the next newsletter, so stay tuned. Congratulations to all runners who tried their best, had fun and improved their physical fitness!
RECYCLING
We continue to collect recycling at Davis Elementary during recess and lunch. Anyone wishing to make additional donations to Davis Elementary recycling can do so by dropping off their recycling at the Green Depot here in Carbonear and ask to have it credited to Davis Elementary’s account.
MMSB has launched the Recycle My Cell School Challenge and we need your old cell phones! HEAD LICE
On occasion there have been cases of head lice within our local area. Head lice are tiny insects that live in human hair around the back of the neck and behind the ears. They lay eggs which become nits. Head lice and nits can be treated with shampoo which can be obtained from the drugstore. Nits, unlike dandruff, stick to the hair and must be removed manually even after using the special shampoo. Head lice can be controlled by examining your child’s head on a regular basis (at least once a week) and especially following social events such as sleep overs or camps. Head lice are spread by head-to-head contact and possibly through sharing of personal items such as combs, brushes, hats, hair bands, headphones, and helmets. Children should be encouraged not to share these items. If our child has head lice, everyone in your household should be checked and if necessary treated. It would be helpful to contact the parents of your child’s close friends, so that they can check their children. Also, please notify the Community Health Nurse for the school/daycare which your child attends. By following these measures, the problem of head lice can be minimized and controlled.

LIVING HEALTHY COMMOTION
Living Healthy Commotion Day was held on Friday, September 24. Students took part in a variety of activities designed to broaden their knowledge of healthy living. Everyone enjoyed the tasty fruit - this was the launch of our weekly Fruity Fridays.

HEALTHY HABITATS
Thank you to Dr. Barry Hicks from the College of the North Atlantic for leading a field trip to the Carbonear duck pond. Also thank you to Dr. Farrell for sponsoring a Ducks Unlimited learning resource package. These many great activities have turned on our scientific minds.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
There are a lot of student achievements to report. They will be included in our next newsletter.

RED DAY FOR OUR TROOPS
The first Friday of every month we wear something red to honour the men and women of our armed forces.

KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS VISIT NOEL’S TURKEY FARM
On Friday, September 24, the Kindergartens went to Noel’s Turkey Farm. The children had a very good time. They saw baby chicks and full grown turkeys. We would like to thank Noel Motors for providing the bus for the tour and Carol Ann Noel for giving us the tour of the turkey farm.

TCP HEALTH FOUNDATION TELETHON
The pennies continue to roll in once again this year for the annual TCP Telethon. This year’s telethon took place on Sunday, October 3rd . A representative from each class presented our donation live on Persona Cable 9 at 2:10 p.m. We were a
‘Grand Giver’ once again this year. Our donation amounted to $526.66!

FARM DAYS
On Thursday, September 23 all students from Grades 1 - 5 travelled to the S. W. Moors Memorial Stadium to take part in Farm Days. Students enjoyed the many new attractions including getting on the ‘Veggie Bus’ and petting farm animals. A great time was had by all. Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who were able to join us.

FALL FAIR SPELLING BEE

It was great to see so many parents on September 29 for Curriculum Night. For any parent/guardian who was unable to attend, hand-outs are available from your child’s homeroom teacher.

CALL FOR SKATES/HELMETS
Davis Elementary is asking for donations of skates/helmets to support its skating program this year. Students will be skating monthly, and to help keep costs down for parents of quickly growing children, Davis is providing free skates/helmets to those in need. If you have any skates/helmets to donate to this worthwhile program - including adult sizes (which may be used by larger children) - please drop them by the school any time during the school day. WELCOME BACK!
September arrived very quickly - we hope you all enjoyed your summer holiday. Throughout the year you will receive a school newsletter - usually once per month. Be sure to read the newsletter carefully as it is a way of passing on important information to parents.

ALLERGIES

MICROWAVE & BREAKFAST PROGRAMS
We are looking for two parents to coordinate the Microwave and Breakfast Programs. The duties of the coordinators would be to solicit volunteers, organize a schedule and communicate the same to the volunteers. These programs are run independent of school staff and the coordinators would assume the responsibility for organization and overseeing. As you may recall we had a difficult time maintaining dedicated parent volunteers last year. Students and families are dependent on these programs; consistency is key. Therefore these programs will only begin when we feel we have more than enough volunteers to keep the programs running all year.

SCHOOL PICTURES

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
All visitors to the school must check in at the office before proceeding to a classroom. If you are picking your child up for lunch or after school please check in at the office first; it is not necessary to arrive at the school until just before dismissal times. It can be very distracting for students when parents wait outside their classroom for long periods of time.

RECYCLING - containers will once again be placed in the hallways. We recycle juice packs (and pop cans on special occasions).

PHYS. ED. REMINDER
Parents are asked to ensure that students remember to wear or bring proper exercise clothing for gym classes. Shorts, track pants, windpants, and sneakers are appropriate and necessary for good hygiene and safety. Please be advised that zipper and slip-on sneakers are potentially hazardous for most Physical Education activities.

NEWSLETTER ITEMS
Every month we celebrate student birthdays through the school PA system and in the monthly newsletter. We also celebrate student achievements in our newsletter - please use the achievement form sent home to notify us of your child’s accomplishments. These are to be returned to your child’s homeroom teacher. Note: Please keep accomplishments short and to the point - we reserve the right to delete unnecessary information.

INDOOR / OUTDOOR FOOTWEAR
Once again this year we require all students to have two pairs of footwear - one for inside the school and one to wear outside.

MEDICATION
A reminder that staff members are not permitted to administer medication of any sort to students. Please do not send Tylenol or other medications to school with your child.

STUDENT DROP OFF
Parents/caregivers who drop off and pick up their children are asked to do so at the DESIGNATED STUDENT WALKWAY. This is the safest route for students to enter and exit school grounds. The staff parking lot is not a safe route for students; only staff vehicles are permitted on the parking lot.
