PARKING LOT SAFETY
An important reminder to all that students and parents are not to use the staff parking lot when coming to school.  Please use the sidewalks, paved walkways and student walkways as this is the only safe way to enter school grounds.

PLEASE NOTE: School doors open upon the arrival of the first bus (between 8:35 - 8:40).  Adult supervision begins at the same time.  Please do not drop off students until this time.

IMPORTANT DATES TO NOTE
     On-going until April 22nd: Powell’s Supermarket is collecting  recyclables in honour of Earth Day; all monies raised will be donated to Davis Elementary!!

KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVAL
Congratulations to all students in Grades 1 - 5 for their fine performances at the Kiwanis Music Festival this year.   A special thank you to Mrs. Mugford-Tuttle for all her efforts.  A big thank you also to Noel Motors for providing free bussing of all students to the festival again this year.

KINDERGARTEN CELEBRATION
This year’s Kindergarten Celebration will take place on Thursday, May 23 at 4:00 p.m..  Admission is free; kind donations will be gratefully accepted.  Two seats will be reserved in front for parents.  More details will follow.

RECYCLING
We have had tremendous success with our Recycling Program this year.  The Blitz previously scheduled for April 12 has been rescheduled for Friday, May 24.  Powell’s Supermarket has kindly offered to do a Blitz in aid of Davis Elementary until Earth Day, April 22nd.  A separate memo has already been sent home.

LIBRARY BOOKS
Any students with Library Books belonging to the school are reminded to return them by April 30 so that all bookkeeping may be clued up and books are packed up to move.

DAVIS ELEMENTARY OPEN HOUSE
The Open House held on Saturday, March 23 was a tremendous success.  The large number of former students, parents, staff plus community members was very touching.

HEALTHY EATING
A reminder that student lunches should follow District Guidelines for Healthy Living.  Please make every effort to provide healthy lunches and snacks for your child.

KINDERSTART
The last KinderStart session for this year is Friday, April 19th.  There is no school for Kindergarten students on that day.

REGISTRATION FOR 2013-2014 KINDERSTART
KinderStart registration for next year will take place
at the school between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. until April 30th.  Please bring along a government issued Birth Certificate and the MCP card.  Children must be four years old by the end of December this year.  Please pass this on to any family you know with an eligible child.

STUDENT PHONE NUMBERS
Parents and guardians are reminded to notify the school when phone numbers change so that we are able to make contact with parents when necessary.  This includes home, work and cell phone numbers.

AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
April is "Autism Awareness Month". On Thursday, April 25th  we will be having an Autism Awareness Day at Davis Elementary. There will be presentations and displays throughout the school. All students are encouraged to wear blue.
Autism facts:
- Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a child's social communication.
- Latest statistics indicate that 1 in 88 children have autism.

POWELL’S POSTER & COLOURING CONTEST WINNERS
In conjunction with the Recycling Blitz that Powell’s is doing for our school they also held colouring and poster contests for the students.  The following students have won prizes:

PARKING LOT SAFETY

OUTDOOR DAYS & PHYS. ED. CLASSES

Students are going outside, whenever possible, to enjoy the snow and fresh air; please be sure to dress your child for outside play. As well, students will be going outside for gym classes whenever weather permits.

100th DAY OF SCHOOL

As part of the Kindergarten Math Program, students count the days of school and celebrate the 100th Day of School (approximately February 21). Once again this year Grade 1 students will help them with their celebration. More details will follow.

KINDERGARTEN & GRADE 1 SKATING PROGRAM

Congratulations to all our Kindergarten and Grade 1 students who have shown lots of improvement in our school skating program; "Way to go, guys!" Just a reminder that bike helmets are NOT permitted for skating. All children MUST wear a C.S.A. approved skating helmet. Parents are encouraged to meet students at the stadium. Help tying up laces is greatly appreciated!!! The last skating session will be held on

March 6th.

VIOLENCE -PREVENTION MONTH

The month of February is Violence Prevention month. Our school will be taking part in a number of anti-bullying activities.On Wednesday, February 27 students will take part in "Stand Up Day", an anti-bullying awareness day. Students from K - 5 will take part in various anti-bullying activities that include presentations from guest speakers. The Grade five students will be taking a lead role in planning this event, from making announcements to organizing classroom activities. On this day all students are encouraged to wear something pink.

 

 

RECYCLING BLITZ COMPETITION
!
Thank you to everyone who brought along recyclables for our second Recycling Blitz Competition. Our proceeds were $600.00 for this event - this will be matched by the MMSB for a grand total of $1200.00. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who came along and counted items or brought them to the Green Depot.

The following students brought in the most recyclables. They enjoyed a lunch at McDonalds - congratulations.

DAVIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLOSING EVENT

As we head into spring we are making plans for the closing of Davis Elementary. It has been a very busy year as we prepare for the big move in September. The coming months promise to be busier still as packing time gets closer. In light of this we are planning an Open House tentatively scheduled to go ahead on Saturday, March 23. The school will be open to parents, students, former students, former staff, and the general public. We realize this is a little early but would like to complete this event before we begin packing. More details on the Open House will follow.

SALE OF DAVIS ELEMENTARY KEEPSAKES



We are in the process of selecting several items to sell to parents or the public. These items would be keepsakes of Davis Elementary. A separate letter will be sent home in the next week with more information.


 

CRITERION-REFERENCED TESTS


Our Grade 3 students and teachers have been working very hard all year preparing for the provincial assessments, Criterion-Referenced Tests in Language Arts and Math. The first portion of this, the Process Writing piece, will begin at the end of March. More information will be sent home soon.

 


TOWN OF CARBONEAR WINTER CARNIVAL

The Town of Carbonear will be holding its annual Winter Carnival from February 22 - March 2. Congratulations to Rylan Durnford, 2F whose slogan ‘Shiver and Shake for Fun’s Sake’ was chosen for this year. Congratulations also to the following Honourable Mentions:

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS


Congratulations to Chelsea Hyde, 3M, who won first place in Black & White poster contest for the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day contest . Chelsea’s poster is now gone on to the provincial level competition.

EASTER BREAK

The last day of classes for students before the Easter Break is Thursday, March 28th. School will reopen on Monday, April 8th.



RECYCLING BLITZ

Our second big Recycling Blitz will take place on Friday, January 25. Items may be dropped off at the school gym, or, as with our first Blitz, you may drop off recyclables at the Green Depot and ask that it be added to Davis Elementary’s account. They will give you a slip to bring to the school to be counted for your child. A separate memo will be sent home with prize info.



We have been asked by the recycling depot to pass along the following reminders:

• please remove all bottle caps; they are no longer accepting containers with caps

• please rinse all containers

• milk containers are not recyclable

• all glass donations must be placed in a box.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE

Congratulations to Hannah Byrne, 5C and Gena McCarthy (Tyler McCarthy-Kennedy, 2T) who were the lucky winners of our Christmas Raffle. Thank you to Ms. Maria Murphy and her mother Mrs. Betty Murphy for making and donating the beautiful handmade skirts; thank you to everyone who bought tickets and supported the cause.



CHRISTMAS DINNER

A free Christmas dinner was provided to all students in grades K - 5 again this year. A BIG THANK YOU to the Carbonear Lions Club and Pennecon Ltd. who were major sponsors for the dinner this year along with Sunburst Farms, Harbour Breeze Catering, and the School Milk Foundation. Thanks also to the Bethany United Church Mens Fellowship Club who cooked and helped to serve our dinner this year. We would like to thank them all for their very generous donations and assistance with our dinner.



INTENSIVE CORE FRENCH (ICF) PROGRAM

There will be a meeting to outline the Grade 6 ICF Program for parents of Grade 5 students interested in the program. We will advise you of the date for this meeting as soon as it is set. If your child wishes to do the ICF Program in Grade 6, please complete the registration form sent home already and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher by Friday, January 18th.




K - 1 SKATING PROGRAM

The next skating session will be held on Wednesday, January 9th.



SKATING PARTIES

There will be Skating Parties for all students in Grades K - 5 on Thursday, February 14th. The Grade K, 1 & 2 students will skate from 9:30 - 10:30; Grades 3, 4 & 5 from 10:30 - 11:30. The cost is $2.00. A separate memo and permission slip will be sent home.



OUTDOOR DAYS

Please be sure to dress your child for outdoor play. The weather has turned colder, however we will continue to take them outside for fresh air and exercise.



Please be advised that head lice has been reported to the administration.



All parents are encouraged to regularly check their child’s head and if treatment is required contact the public health nurse (945-6578) or a physician.



Discuss with your child the importance of not sharing combs / brushes or wearing other people’s caps.



Nutrition Note


New Year = New Healthy Breakfast!


A healthy breakfast will provide the energy your body needs to begin your day. Pump up the nutrition in your breakfast by choosing:


 Whole grain breads

• High fibre cereals and oatmeal

• Low fat yogurt and dairy products

• Fresh fruit

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS


Congratulations to Rebecca Sellars, 3N who sang for the Town of Carbonear Queens Jubilee Celebrations on November 4th. Rebecca had a lead role in The Paper Bag Princess with Atlantic Acting on November 25th and also performed in Harbour Music’s first music recital in November.



Congratulations to Isaac Hodder, 1K who passed Level 2 swimming on December 19th.



Congratulations to Chelsea Hyde, 3M, Christian Sheppard, 3N and Amanda Chen, 4J who were winners in this year’s Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day Poster and Literary Contests. These students will receive their awards on January 31st at 7:00 p.m.
