MAY 2011


FLEA MARKET
Thank you to everyone who supported our Flea
Market on Saturday, May 7th. It was a huge success
once again this year!


KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION PICTURE
RE-TAKES - will be done on Monday, May 16th.


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY
There will be no school for students on Thursday,
May 19th due to a teacher professional development
day.


CAMPING DAY
In honour of the May long weekend we are asking
everyone to wear their ‘camping clothes’ on Friday,
May 20! Show your Davis Elementary school spirit.


HOLIDAY
There will be no classes for students on Monday,
May 23rd due to the Victoria Day Holiday.


UPCOMING DATES IN MAY
• May 18: Visit from well known
Newfoundland author/artist Ed Kavanagh.
• May 20: Grandparents Day - Grade 5

• May 26-27: Grade 3 Language Arts CRT



KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION
Our Kindergarten
Graduation will take place
on Thursday, June 9th.



GRADE 5 YEAR-END SOCIAL
This year’s Grade 5 farewell event will take place on
Wednesday, June 15th. More details will follow.



FRUITY FRIDAY
Reminder to bring along your fruit on
Fridays!



DONATION
A big thank you to Noel Motors who provided ‘free
bussing’ to all the choirs who performed in this year’s
Kiwanis Music Festival!


FITNESS FUN
Spring is in the air! We at Davis are encouraging
families to get out and get active together. Start with 15
minutes a day - go for a walk, rake your leaves, ride a
bike, play tag in your yard. A family that plays together
will be healthy together.


BRACELET DAY
How many bracelets do you have? Wear all your
bracelets to school on Wednesday, May 18 to show your
school spirit! Davis Elementary bracelets can be
purchased for $2.00 at any time.


MILKY MONDAY
May 30th is Milky Monday. Dress in black and white
like a dairy cow and bring something from the dairy
group for recess or lunch. Milk prizes will be awarded.
Thanks to the School Milk Foundation for providing
free milk and prizes all year!


BE PREPARED’
We have been actively encouraging all Davis
Elementary students to ‘Be Prepared’ at all times.
Students receive a ballot at the end of every day if they
can answer ‘yes’ to the following questions:
✔ Was I prepared for morning announcements (sitting
and listening)?
✔ Did I have my books out and a pencil sharpened for
the beginning of each class?
✔ Was I sitting in my seat after the bell?
✔ Did I complete all assigned homework?

All ballots are entered for Friday draws. Last week’s

RECYCLING DRIVE
We will be having a Recycling
Drive on Saturday, June 11th
from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Mr. Phil Hurley will be at the
school parking lot to accept your
donations. If you have recycling
to donate but no way to get it here
please call Mr. Phil Hurley at 596-0345 and he will
arrange a time to have it picked up. Every student
who brings in some recycling from home will have
his/her name put in a draw for some prizes.


STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations to Stacey Slade, 5Y and her Cee
Bees team mates on winning Bronze in Marystown in
March.

Congratulations to Susie Butt, KC for winning the
colouring contest at Shopper’s Drug Mart.

Congratulations to Colby Sharpe, 2B for earning the
following badges in CLB: 1st year achievement J.T.C.
badge, Attendance badge, Recruits badge, Christian
knowledge, Agility and Service. Colby is also
working on Level 5 in swimming.

Congratulations to Sebastian LeShane, 4J. Sebastian
placed first at Kiwanis for his piano solo in the 11
years and under class 59; he placed second for his
piano solo in the 12 years and under class 75B.
Sebastian also attained the rank of “orange belt” in
Kenpo at Foley’s Martial Arts.

Congratulations to Alaina King, 2B who finished the
first set of classes K-2 and was promoted to the next
group 3-4 at Michelle’s Art Studio in March.

Congratulations to the following grade 2 students who
finished first year novice Cee Bees hockey :
Matthew Slade, Owen Harvey, Kyle Short, Hunter
Saunders, Hailee Hoyles, Joshua Kennedy, Matthew
King, Kayden Coombs.

Congratulations to Riley Green , 2B who placed second
for his performance in the Kiwanis Music Festival on
April 5th.

Congratulations to Adrian Green, 1K who performed a
piano solo at the Kiwanis Music Festival in Carbonear
and was awarded first place.

Congratulations to Adrian & Riley Green who
performed a piano duet - Puppy Love- at the Kiwanis
Festival. They received a mark of 87.5% and were
invited back to perform at the Stars of the Festival on
Tuesday, April 12th.

Congratulations to Erica Thoms, 2B for completing
Level 3 in skating, April 18th.

Congratulations to Sara Earle, 2B who completed Art
lessons.

Congratulations to Caleb Butt, 2B who just completed
Level 1 guitar lessons.

Congratulations to Rileigh Lewis, 4M who performed
in the Stars of the Festival on April 12th.

Congratulations to Jessica Young (5C), Julia Young
(4M) and Sara Young (1K). The three sisters all
donated their hair on April 23 to an organization called
“Angel Hair for Kids”. This organization helps kids
living with cancer to have wigs. The hair must be 10
inches in length. This is the second donation for Julia
and Sara and the first for Jessica. Well done!
